I've been down that road before, it did not work well as Ubuntu is now very closely aligned with GNOME. But I suspect that KDE on Ubuntu 20 is hopeless. I'd like to find a working config much more like the TightVNC remote/ vncserver server combo, that really worked fine. I know that TightVNC can work very well with vncserver on KDE (we have a client who has set that up for us on a CentOS6 box), but with Ubuntu 20 it's trying to work with GNOME at least by default. What I like to do is boost a frequencies with a narrow Q, then sweep the frequencies knob back and forth until I hear something I don't like (or do like) and then decide if I want to boost it or cut it slightly. You can look at charts that give you ballpark figures about where you'll find the fundamental frequencies for a given instrument or sound, but it's often easier to use the EQ to help you do that. A piano or vocals, while capable of producing low bass notes, don't always lend themselves to being the best instrument to dominate that domain, so you might use a HPF to cut off the bass frequencies, leaving the upper harmonics, and allow the bass guitar or upright or synth or whatever you have for bass sounds to have it's own space. So for example you want the bass region of your sound to be dedicated to instruments who are intended to be bass instruments. If many instruments occupy the same range of colors, they become hard to distinguish from each other, so what you have to adjust the EQ to compensate or aid sounds that overlap with other sounds. When you mix multiple sounds together you're blending different sets of color bands and gradients on top of each other. Sounds are complex things and if there were a way to convert sound into light, and then pass it through a prism, you would see that each sound has it's own unique bands where there are obviously dominant fundamental stripes and hazy gradients in the higher frequencies that are soft but still add character to the overall color of that sound they're called harmonics. James Bernard of Propellerhead Software likes to describe sound kind of the same way you'd describe light, with a spectrum of wavelengths that produce different colors depending on the wavelength and brightness depending on the amplitude of that wave. The most important thing to remember about makeup gain is that it is for making the compressed signal louder so you can set it to where the uncompressed and compressed signals are the same volume in order to know if you are accurately hearing your compression settings. Attack and release times are important to train your ears to get used to, because they are more subtle to detect when the compressor is bypassed than ratio and threshold. You listen to the example and toggle the EQ on and off to compare.Īs for compression, reading about the technical side can only get you so far compared to just sitting with compressors and doing your own ear training. It also had musical examples and asks you to identify the EQ settings being used, for instance what frequency is being boost or cut by 10dB (easy mode) or 3dB (hard mode). There's a really great app in the app store on iPad and Mac osx called Quiztones which is an ear training program that has you identify sine wave frequencies, to familiarize yourself with the frequency spectrum and more easily identify where the resonant points you don't like about the sound you're EQing. It's often impossible to tweak the EQ so that it would suit a track for it's whole duration.
![]() In the meantime I’ve managed to get the Netflix and Dutch national broadcasting service NPO, as well as Spotify and Youtube to work properly. I promised above I’d report back about my progress and experience of replacing my Chromecast with addons on Kodi, which in my case is running on Librelec, a minimal Linux os which simply boots Kodi. But maybe someone more technically skilled can shine a light on this. In regards to VLC and the Bubble app working while Spotify and Netflix don’t, I think this has to do with the fact that the former play local files, whereas Spotify, Netflix and the NPO app somehow send a link to the Chromecast or something. Nonetheless, I still believe that Chromecast functionality is essential for people switching to /e/, but this seems to work for now. I’ve added some screenshots to give you an idea. So maybe someone making the switch to /e/ that already has a Libreelec/Kodi setup might be helped with this. I’ll be testing in the coming weeks whether this is stable enough to replace my Chromecast with something I already had up and running. After, you’re still able to pause, stop and search from the player on your phone via such a remote app. But this week I discovered that you can browse these addons from your phone and then click to play them on your tv. I was aware that there were remote apps, like the official and the unofficial Yatse. Also, them working well was very depended on the Kodi theme used, and my preferred theme did not support it well. However, for me these addons never quite formed a good alternative, since I just really liked browsing in the app on my phone and then ‘casting’ it to the tv while being able to start and stop on my phone. I already had a unofficial Netflix addon and an addon called Retrospect which features all kinds of regional and national broadcasting, amongst others the Dutch NPO. It has all my media in libraries, but can also run so-called addons, apps for Kodi. ![]() For years, even before I had the Chromecast, I’ve had a little media machine running LibreElec, a mini os based on Linux with just Kodi. This week I’ve discovered that I’ve got quite a good alternative setup for the Chromecast for those that have a Kodi machine. Because that might be a good alternative, to still also get rid of Google and not need Chromecast support. Does anyone know how important this issue does Roku support the NPO app? (From your name I got you might be Dutch, your profile confirmed this, so thought you might use NPO haha). For developpers it may really be worth looking into why this particular app works and whether workarounds may be possible based on this. Therefore I find it very interesting to see that the Bubble upnp app which speaks of, does indeed support Chromecast. But would rather not “solve” it this way. I’ve not switched back to Lineage because I’ve also got a phone from work which I’m not allowed to root and flash anyway, so I’ve essentially still got Chromecast support. Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s terrible that this vendor lock in happens with the Chromecast and I’m really much more in favour of open source and open standards, but since some apps only support Chromecast, this is an important issue for the usability of /e/, nonetheless. For me, it would be the reason not to recommend /e/. And lack of Chromecast support is the major drawback for me. I’ve used /e/ since about… well, my original post here. ![]() NOTE: This product is a TRANSMITTER, not a receiver. ![]() For even MORE creativity, pair with the GOgroove BlueGate Bluetooth Receiver and sync practically ANY two media devices! ![]() This produces additional points of Tourism and Culture for the city without actually having more Great Works or Artifacts. Theming Bonus Main article: Theming bonus (Civ5)Īll buildings that contain more than one Great Work slot may activate a special theming bonus. Also, your Tourism output is doubled upon the discovery of The Internet. The National Visitor Center greatly increases your Tourism output. Note that both of these buildings require an existing base ( Tourism and Culture sources), and don't produce Tourism on their own. Thanks to them, you can now use the countryside as a source of your Tourism, as it isn't only scholars that visit your museums, but there are also common people that get impressed by nice Culture-generating improvements, such as the Landmarks. The Hotel and the Airport are designed to facilitate the touristic trips of guests and help them experience much more of your culture. In later eras, when travelling to other countries isn't done only for business or military reasons but also for leisure, new buildings become available which are specifically designed to boost Tourism based on existing Tourism and Culture within the city and surrounding territory. That's why it is recommended to move all Great Works/Artifacts from cities which are in danger of falling to enemy invaders. At the same time, the enemy that acquires that city will gain the Great Work and all its bonuses. If, for some reason, you lose the building or the city, you will also lose the Great Work and all the Tourism and Culture it produced. Note that each slot is associated with a building, and by extension a city. The Aesthetics policy tree finisher doubles these bonuses for an even greater impact.Īll cultural buildings (except the Monument) now have free slots for Great Works or Artifacts, and consequently, are able to produce Tourism when these slots are filled. These bonuses count as base stats, and are basically free points which have the potential to boost your overall Tourism output significantly. Only then are the Tourism and Culture benefits activated. Each Great Work/Artifact provides a base of +2 Tourism (as well as +2 Culture), and under special conditions may add much more.įinally, Museums and certain wonders have the ability to produce additional Tourism (and Culture) as a bonus if you fill their slots with certain combinations of Great Works and/or Artifacts. In fact, you can't even produce a Great Work or dig out an Artifact unless there's a free slot of the appropriate type to put it in. Great Works and Artifacts are used by placing them into appropriate special slots in special buildings in your cities. These new game items represent your civilization's unique cultural "offensive" power which directly affects the other civilizations' own Culture. Both are produced by your civilization's efforts, won from other civilizations by conquest, or traded for the same type of item from another civilization. Unlike Culture, which has many sources (including external sources, such as Cultured City-States), the main source of Tourism is Great Works and Artifacts - a new class of game objects, or game items with great cultural significance. Great Works Main article: Great Work (Civ5) The purpose for this is, of course, to eliminate any possibility of a premature Cultural Victory. Sources of Tourism are few, and very scarce in the early and middle game only in the late game do certain new technologies like Flight help your influence spread faster. Instead, Tourism just piles up slowly, turn after turn, spreading the fame of your civilization across the globe, or at least to every single civilization you've met. First of all, the Tourism you generate isn't spent on anything - no Social Policy adoption, no unit and building purchase, etc. Its production mechanics, however, are quite different. Tourism is similar to Science in that it is only used on the empire level. Their exceptional cultural value, stamped with the unique mark of your civ, impacts other civilizations, spreading the glory of your culture and impressing them.Īt the same time, the previously known Culture is used to "counter" other civilizations' Tourism, asserting your own cultural identity and protecting it from the spread and influence of other cultures. Its sources are unique works of art produced by your civilization, which rise above building a wonderful building or making lots of theater plays and operas, as well as ancient artifacts dug up by your Archaeologists and then proudly displayed in your buildings and wonders. It can be described as the second, offensive part of the new cultural system of the game - practically an offensive Culture, which exclusively affects the other civilizations, spreading your influence by cultural means. Tourism is a new gameplay stat in the Civilization V: Brave New World expansion pack, and the key to achieving the new Cultural Victory. ![]() When a company defaults, and is eligible for acquisition due to bankruptcy, it would be really nice to be able to see the chart where their factories and branches are (as well as how large) before doing the takeover. The game switches to global production instantly when auto-produce is set, so I'm guessing the code is mostly there already. ![]() Once a company gets to a certain size, and a lot of models are being deployed, it's difficult to remember to reset the shipping distance all the time a new vehicle is launched. ![]() Maybe just as an option to "make all branches global" or "make all branches regional" or "standard shipping distance", whatever's easiest. Basically when checked/activated, it would make all shipping distances a set distance (or just regional/global). Whether through a map command, or apply to all, or autocommand, doesn't really matter. This way iterations of vehicles could be found together easily.Įasy way to switch entire company to regional or global shipping defaults Would be awesome if you could isolate a marquis rather than burrow through a bunch of pages.Ī possible alternate approach would be to have a sort (actually multi-sort) that named them by :Marquis, Model, Year as a form of predefined nametag string on the vehicle screen. Probably a bit more work, but would be really nice when you start getting multiple pages of entries and you are trying to work on a specific marquis line. Would be nice to have a filter for marquis. Basically, the idea is to be able to see at a glance, how your cars of the same type, such as sedans, stack up against each other in terms of price and rating. A filter (on the lower models list) would be a third alternative. Alternatively (and probably more difficultly) to have the cars ratings visible on the model list pricing sheet. ![]() This would be useful to quickly identify which models are yours and how they stack up against each other in terms of ratings. Owned vehicles color highlight in branch models list An alternative might be to label parts with the actual originating company (rather than the company holding them, although the drawback there is that you wouldn't see the company holding it, so I think colors are easier and better way to spot. Having that on the view parts screen would be nice. You can go through them in the upgrade parts and see which can be modified, as long as it's not new, but then you have to remember which is which to discontinue. Would be really useful when evaluating inventory after picking up a large company with a bunch of models and parts. Use a color to highlight any parts/vehicles that are licensed or outsourced. Gives a reason to look at it more often, and would just be a nice feature. I'd like to see my own company at the top of the newspaper stock charts (at least if publicly traded). Many of these suggestions aren't really an issue until you start getting a lot of data to deal with, but then they are really cumbersome to work through. Some are just to find things faster, others are so that as much of my memory doesn't have to be relied on when flipping through multiple screens. Most of these are oriented towards dealing with the kinds of problems that come up when your company is large and running multiple marquees. I understand that some of these things may be difficult to make code changes for, or you may not be interested in doing, but I'll throw them out there along with the reasoning for each. Some things that I'd like to see ( suggestions). The update which affected trading components, and the autocommand to block sharing designs was definitely nice. Spinning them off tends to clear up lists, which is fairly complicated, but does make it easier to focus on the main company. Part of that is because I haven't tried it before, and the other part is because managing really big companies gets complex, and things to streamline that would make that more enjoyable. Currently I'm playing a game where I'm mostly focused on acquiring companies, raiding their inventory, restructuring them and spinning them off as (mostly) wholly owned subsidiaries. ![]() They whacked our Cavelry badly and drove them through Liberty. The Rebs came up on our rear this afternoon and attacted with spirit. They found some flour and some pigs and had quite a good supper. We again passed through Liberty and encamped about one mile out of the town. The Cavelry generally go in advance and pick up everything that is eatable that could be found. Those fortunate enough to have anything to eat cooked it and those that had none went without. We marched all night, nor rested until ten o’clock the next morning. Some two miles out we came upon some of our boys who had been ordered to cook beef. Some were completely exhausted and had no control of themselves. We were already worn with hunger and exhaustion from the last 4 days and nearly sleepless nights. Our amunition was nearly exhausted and we had no rations or place to get any. We were hundreds of miles away from reinforcements and supplies. Rebel soldiers fight splendidly and there is no better soldiers to bear burdens or suffer privations or defeats. The troops are not so very differently constituted. We also found that it was not impossible to overcome us. We have since learned, to our cost, that it was too small to go where we went. We thought when we were going to Lynchburg that we had an awful large army and nothing could stand before it. The firing served to drown the noise of our retreat. The Cavelry left their horses some distance back and opened a brisk fire all along the line. It was a very bad place to get an army from without alarming the enemy. Everything was moved with caution and in perfect order. We had not marched 10 minutes until we saw enough to satisfy us that we were retreating. At half past 8 Pm we were right about faced and marched by the flank. This was done in order to deceive the enemy for our rear was already on the retreat. Our battle lines were kept up and our skirmish lines strengthened. Our dead and most of our wounded fell into the enemy’s hands. ![]() We could never retreat, that was impossible if we were not all captured we should most certainly starve. We must and would take Lynchburg at all hazards rations we must have and we could get them only in Lynchburg. The waggon trains were soon started back but we did not think such a thing possible. After the battle, Hunter made preparations to retreat. We heard heavy canonading afar off in our front. We supposed Grant would send us reinforcements. We waited anxiously and wondered why our forces were idle but concluded that the Cavelry were flanking them. They were chopping and hammering all night. While laying on the skirmish line tonight we knew when reinforcements came to the enemy. They took so long putting Staunton, Lexington, and other towns to the torch that General Early, sent on by Lee to save Lynchburg, arrived just in time. Then, as seasoned soldiers, the 34th started south with Hunter’s 18,000, burning as they went, with the objective of destroying Confederate stores at Lynchburg.
